TasFarmers media release: Future Flock highlights growth opportunities for sheep sector

TasFarmers has welcomed ongoing work to develop a long-term strategy for Australia’s sheep meat and wool sectors following consultation with Tasmanian producers in Campbell Town.

The workshop formed part of The Future Flock process, a national program aimed at shaping the future direction of the sheep industry through input from producers and the broader supply chain.

TasFarmers said the session provided a valuable opportunity for Tasmanian producers to share their perspectives and contribute to discussions about the industry’s future.

Chief Executive Officer Nathan Calman said the consultation highlighted a strong alignment between issues raised in Tasmania and those being discussed nationally.

“It was encouraging to see that many of the challenges our members are facing are consistent with what’s being heard across the country,” Mr Calman said.

“That creates a solid foundation for a national strategy that reflects the realities of producers, wherever they operate.”

The Campbell Town workshop brought together producers and supply chain participants to explore current challenges, identify opportunities and consider what is needed to support a stronger industry over the long term.

Discussions were open-ended, covering rising costs, workforce constraints, market access and the need for stronger coordination across the sector.

Producers also highlighted the importance of aligning industry structures to better address long-standing issues.

Tasmanian input into national planning

TasFarmers said the consultation marks another step in the development of the national strategy, with further engagement expected as the process continues.

Sheep Producers Australia CEO Bonnie Skinner said ongoing industry input would be critical to shaping a practical and effective plan.

“It’s important that producers and the sheep supply chain remain engaged so the final strategy reflects the needs and priorities of the industry,” Ms Skinner said.

“The Future Flock is about building a shared vision that can guide the sheep industry through change and position it for the long term.”

TasFarmers will continue to participate in the process and provide input on behalf of its members as the strategy develops.
