Researching the issues shaping the future of the sheep industry

Every year, Sheep Producers Australia partners with the Australian National University (ANU) to provide students with the opportunity to undertake research on issues important to the Australian sheep industry.

The internship program delivers benefits in two ways. It helps develop the next generation of agricultural professionals while also providing fresh analysis on emerging issues and opportunities facing sheep producers.

Recently, ANU students Juliet Borean and Nadir Ameen completed research projects focused on two timely topics: sheep feedlotting and energy use on sheep farms.

Juliet's project explored sheep feedlotting and the role it may play in modern sheep production systems. As seasonal variability, market requirements and supply chain expectations continue to evolve, understanding the opportunities and challenges associated with feedlotting is becoming increasingly important for producers and the broader industry.

Nadir's research examined energy use on sheep farms, providing insights into where energy is consumed across sheep enterprises and the factors influencing on-farm energy demand.
