“This is a once in a generation opportunity for our industry to improve our market access. In the lead up to the meetings in Osaka Sheep Producers Australia had called on Minister Farrell and Minister Watt to maintain their resolve and ambition in securing commercially viable and fairer access for Australian sheepmeat.

As negotiations are being finalised around the ambitious Australia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (A-EU FTA) Australia’s sheep industry is crying out for a level playing field on the EU bloc, insisting the Australian Government must hold fast in securing significant increases in market access for Australian red meat imports.

The strategy outlines critical priority actions that Sheep Producers Australia has been advocating for as a part of reforms to Australia’s livestock traceability systems, including the creation of a sustainable funding model, appropriate governance mechanisms, communication initiatives to strengthen the awareness of traceability, and a nationally consistent approach to traceability regulation.

The Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement will deliver benefits and opportunities for many Australian producers. For sheepmeat this means Australia will have access to a tariff-free quota of 25,000 tonnes rising to 75,000 tonnes and tariffs eliminated after ten years.

The Australian sheepmeat industry today welcomed the signing of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) by Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan and Indian Minister for Commerce and Industry Priyush Goyal.
