Sheep Producers Australia congratulates Labor on the election win

23 May 2022

Sheep Producers Australia (SPA) would like to congratulate Anthony Albanese and Labor on their election win and look forward to the announcement of the new agriculture minister.

SPA look forward to working with the Albanese Government and welcome their commitment to supporting national traceability for the livestock sector.

“National traceability reform will ensure that livestock traceability can evolve and meet future biosecurity and market access requirements as well as unlock productivity gains throughout the supply chain.”

SPA will progress discussions around biosecurity, the importance of agricultural events, investing in the sheep and broader red meat industry, strengthening market access, their position on the live export of sheep and what this means for our WA producers.

A priority for SPA is to work with our new government on the critical workforce shortage for our industry and address the need for a dedicated meat industry working visa.

“Sheepmeat production is a significant industry that supports nearly every region in Australia and has underpinned the prosperity of the country and employed generations of Australians. A safe, healthy, and skilled workforce throughout the supply chain, will secure a strong future for sheep producers both domestically and within our global markets.”

SPA would like to thank and acknowledge the outgoing Minister for Agriculture the Hon David Littleproud and the Morrison government for their advocacy and support of the sheep industry and broader agriculture sector and look forward to continuing to work with them as they enter the Opposition.
