Sheep Producers Australia welcomes announcement that the Trade deal with India will commence on 29 December

1 Dec 2022

Sheep Producers Australia welcomes the confirmation yesterday by the Albanese government that the Indian Government has completed its domestic requirements to enable implementation of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).

“The tariff commitments provided by India will open up access for Australia's sheep meat to enable our industry to be better placed to help supply some of the demand in India for high quality sheep meat.” Bonnie Skinner CEO SPA.

This trade agreement will deliver new market access opportunities for Australian sheep producers with a reduction of a 30% tariff on Australian sheep meat.

“The Australian lamb industry has a long history of producing safe, quality lamb for customers around the world. This agreement signals a new chapter in our bilateral relations and an opportunity for us to work collaboratively for years to come.” Ms Skinner.

The industry would like to acknowledge and thank Minister Dan Tehan, Indian Minister for Commerce, and Industry Priyush Goyal, their respective negotiating teams, Anthony Albanese MP Prime Minister and Senator Don Farrell, Minister for Trade & Tourism.

“We look forward to strengthening relationships with India and acknowledge the significance of this trade agreement in providing Australian sheep producers with an alternative market.” Ms Skinner.
