Sheep Producers Australia Bushfire crisis update

7 Jan 2020

Thousands of farmers in southern Australia have been impacted by the current bushfire crisis.

The National Farmers Federation (NFF) Farm Hub page contains details for where to access information and assistance and will be updated as new services become available. To donate to relief agencies, visit how you can help.

Comments from SPA Acting CEO Stephen Crisp:

“The thoughts and best wishes of the board, staff and members of Sheep Producers Australia are with the farmers and communities affected by the bushfire crisis unfolding across Australia at present. This has been a truly challenging start to 2020 and, for many producers, comes on top of some of the driest years they have experienced on their properties.

“SPA is supporting its members – the state farming organisations – which are providing localised practical assistance to sheep producers working relentlessly to save homes, farms and stock. SPA commends the SFOs for their exceptional efforts in helping producers get the information they need to deal with the current crisis, such as sourcing water, fodder and agistment as well as people willing to provide on-ground assistance in recovery efforts.

“Meat & Livestock Australia advises there are close to 80,000 property identification codes in the main affected regions and, based on current estimates, 13% of the national sheep flock live in regions that have been significantly impacted. The full impact on the industry is not yet known but SPA is committed to working with MLA and all businesses along the sheepmeat value chain more broadly to assist individual and industry recovery once fires are under control – which we hope is imminent.

“In the meantime, for those affected by the bushfires, the NFF FarmHub is the best place for bushfire contacts including livestock services, recovery information and mental health resources.”
